Carry on wayward son

With two of us having found our way home and one on his way, I figured this would be one of my last entries to the blog. I would say the Operation was a resounding success. All goals set were either met or surpassed. Even the redacted was more amazing than we could have ever expected. No animals were harmed during this Operation. The same cannot be said for our true advisaries, the bugs. It was a bug planet and we unleashed total devastation. By our count, the casualty numbers range from the hundred thousands to redacted. During Operation Funcut, not a single shitty person was encountered while off the bikes. While riding, shitty drivers were a daily obstacle, but did not take away from the trip they just added excitement, terror, and some great laughs.
As with previous Operations once it’s over it’s funny how experiences that you’ve forgotten come back seemingly at random. All of a sudden there you are on a no name road, digging into turns, and involuntarily smiling. There are no pictures of this road and no comments made about it, but there you are. It’s a beautiful thing. The road affects all of us differently but the effects are strangely similar. For example redacted has high blood pressure, but after the trip his readings were normal. I think maybe instead of prescribing meds, doctors should start thinking about prescribing road trips. As for me, I have stomach issues that almost completely dissappeared during the trip. Whether this was due to the riding itself, diet change, or state of mind I do not know. What I do know is that I feel great and I’m excited to see what comes next .
Thank you for coming along.

Space oddity

In an attempt to beat the heat we started an hour earlier than usual this morning. The weather was nice and cool and roads were relatively empty. We raced the sun for a few hours and made some really good progress. Our comm lines are always open, but this morning everyone was silent. Though I couldn’t guess what the other guys were thinking, I imagined Swampkat thinking of his next big idea, Triple Nickel probably thinking about his family, as for me I was thinking about the future but it sounded more like that pop goes the weasel song.
I watched our shadows grow short as the sun rose. It feels like the movie Sunshine here the sun is so intense. As their shadows moved directly beneath them, the shadows looked more like the silhouettes of space ships. I imagined us making attack runs on everything from oncoming traffic, to wind turbines, and the towns we rode through. There were no survivors… What? The sun made us do it.

We’re all highway

All day long. This was all of our first times in the Texas panhandle.. Let’s just cut to the chase, you don’t need to come here. It’s flat and it’s hot. It’s so flat you can see the curvature of the earth. There were a lot of bugs and a blazing hot wind the majority of the day. Not our most amazing of days, but it beats work.

Goodbye Colorado

Here we are, last day in Colorado. The entire morning was amazing roads. Great turns along the Arkansas river. Beatiful landscape as well. It was a real treat. After lunch we rode next to the Rockies and got a little taste of what is in store for us weatherwise. Spoiler alert, it’s gonna be hot!
Great day though, that road this morning.. Damn it was good

On our way.

We continued moving south today and made our way back into Colorado. It’s too amazing to pass up and our choices to the east are pretty bleak. Eastern Colorado was mostly farmland but it wasn’t long before you could see the rockies. Denver was chaos, at least the highway didn’t go directly through downtown though because it could have been much worse. We ate near red rock then pushed into the mountains. We spent the rest of the day dodging storms, sitting in crazy construction traffic, or just taking in the scenery. It was a strange but good day.
We are all having a great time but know the end is coming. Our roadtrips are all ending on different days so we are going to try to spend sometime Friday to debrief. I think it will be nice to just shoot the shit when this awesome experience is still fresh in our minds.

Endless Grasslands

Today was a staging day and it was all grasslands. 280 or so miles of grassland. I couldn’t believe we didn’t get any terrain changes, just endless grassy hills and turns you could do with your eyes shut. In all those miles would you believe we didn’t have to deal with a single vehicle? A few dozen came from the opposite direction but that was it.

Tatanka

Last night’s KOA stay was just about as perfect as anyone could want. There were so many stars. It’s been a long time since any of us had really seen them and if you took your eyes off of the fire for long enough to focus on them their sheer numbers was awesome. The first ‘star’ we saw was actually Jupiter. It was right in line with the tower.
We cooked spam and beans that we brought all the way from California, drank a little too much, and had a an amazing time.
The roads today were tight and beautiful. We road through the black Hills and are now in South Dakota.
An hour or so ago we ran into a few heards of tatanka. They were less than a lane’s width away and let me tell you, that shit was scary. They seemed to really dislike the sound of our bikes and when we were close they would freak out and run. Kind of like a stamped, well I guess just like one. The real terror came when the majority of the heard had ran but this big ass one just stood there and eye balled us. His shoulders were the same height as mine. There were light brown baby buffalo running around so seeing the crazy in the big son of a bitches eyes reminded me of Alaska moose crazy. They kill more people than bears. As we rode away I had to look back because I was sure that big one was coming!

The tower.

After a day of getting our asses kicked by the wind we made it! We are staying at a KOA at the tower’s base. It’s pretty sweet. They show close encounters here every night.
We have a cabin that has a bunk bed and another bed, a fire pit, a river out the back window, and the tower is visible from the porch swing.
Time to get some supplies and celebrate!

Windy Wyoming

We made it into Wyoming today. Not a lot to report otherwise. We are getting close to the most northern part of this section of the trip. Tomorrow, Devils Tower. Hail Satan

The salmon of Capistrano

This state is ridiculous. Again we were granted a day of friggin amazing riding. Forget going to a national park and just follow our tracks through the state. I promise you will be blown away.
Massive terrain changes throughout the day and the roads were pretty much empty in the best sections. The canyons we ended the day in yesterday were amazing this morning.  The motel we stayed in last night was fantastic. A little place called the Rimrock Hotel, in Naturita. We chilled outside next to our bikes, watched the sunset, and did as we pleased. It was an awesome experience.
We have a couple 360s for you guys but the internet is usually an issue. The file sizes are just too large. Speaking of large, today I had a dark passenger that I want to talk about. We had just summited a mountain and were twisting our way back down the other side when suddenly I realized I had a guest. There was a little foreplay at first, but not the usual kind. There wasn’t biting or the typical stuff, this little bastard seemed to be climbing off my ear, on to the helmet, then back to my ear. I remember saying, “Get it over with!” (phrasing) And I violently shook my head. Well that didn’t sit well with the little monster and it began trying to fly in the small inescapable place between my ear and helmet. I told the guys we need to stop, ain’t no way I can concentrate anymore. We pull off into soft dirt, I gave Orion way too much front brake and almost dumped the bike. I didn’t drop the bike but the force of stopping racked me against the tank. I ripped my helmet off and inside was a big ass bee. Not cool, but way better than any day at work.
